Your AI Chats Could Be Costing You Clients
31 July 2026
Anthropic's Claude let users generate public share links for chat conversations and Artifacts, meaning documents, code and other outputs. Some of those links ended up indexed by Google, so private conversations became searchable by anyone. Hundreds of exposed chats were found public, and the leak was traced back to Claude's share chat feature. Anthropic has since restricted indexing, but the exposed links had already been live for weeks.
What this means for your hours and your margin
If you run a trade or construction business and you use Claude, ChatGPT or any AI tool to draft quotes, cost breakdowns, subcontractor terms or client emails, this story is not abstract. A share link feels private. It is not. Once a link exists, you have no control over who finds it, and search engines can crawl public links without you ever knowing.
Worked example: say you use an AI assistant to build a pricing model for a £50,000 fit-out job, including your margin, labour rates and supplier discounts. You share that chat with a site manager using a quick link instead of exporting the document properly. If that link gets indexed, a competitor bidding on the same tender now has your cost structure for free. You lose the job, or you win it at a margin you did not intend to accept. That single leak can cost more than the profit you were chasing on the job itself, because it exposes your pricing strategy on every future tender too.
The hours cost is smaller but real. Every business using AI tools now needs someone to check share settings, audit what has already been shared, and set a rule for what never goes into a shareable chat. That is an hour of admin you did not have last month, but it is cheaper than the alternative.
What to do this month
- Log into every AI tool your business uses and check for old share links. Revoke anything you do not recognise or no longer need.
- Set a house rule: no prices, margins, client names or contract terms go into a chat that can be shared externally.
- Use exported documents or PDFs for anything sensitive, not live share links.
- Ask your team which AI tools they are using unofficially. Most owners have no idea.
- Review this every quarter. AI tools change their sharing defaults without much warning.
The technology is not the problem. Careless sharing settings are. Fix the habit, not the hype.
