What Bouygues UK's £200m Loss Teaches Owners

17 August 2026

Bouygues UK has posted pretax losses of £76m for 2025, more than double the £32m lost the year before. That takes the contractor's total losses over the last four years past £200m, even as revenue rose 5% to £395m. The firm pointed to subcontractor performance and labour shortages as the main causes.

Why this matters for smaller builders

Bouygues has finance teams, site managers and reporting systems most SME contractors can only dream of. If a business that size can lose £76m in a single year without spotting it early enough to stop it, the same risk sits inside every smaller firm — just at a scale that can sink you rather than dent a group balance sheet.

Take a worked example. A contractor turning over £2m a year with a target margin of 8% expects £160,000 profit. Lose just 2 percentage points to untracked subcontractor overruns and unbilled labour hours — easy to do across a handful of live jobs — and that profit drops to £120,000. On a £2m turnover, that's £40,000 gone, quietly, with nobody flagging it until the final account.

The pattern in the Bouygues numbers is familiar to anyone running sites: subcontractor output isn't checked against programme often enough, and labour cost isn't compared against budget in real time. By the time the finance team sees the full picture, the job is finished and the loss is locked in.

What to do this month

None of this needs new software or a big project. It needs someone looking at the numbers weekly instead of quarterly. Bouygues had the systems. What it didn't have, on its own account, was tight enough control of subcontractor performance. That's the bit every smaller contractor can fix this month, for free.
