Canva's New AI Image Model Saves Marketing Hours
23 October 2026
Canva has released its first in-house AI image generation model, called Craft, and switched it on for every user today, not just paying Pro subscribers. The model plans a design before it renders the image, so Canva says the first result is more likely to match what you actually asked for, rather than needing five rerolls.
What it means for your marketing budget
Most UK trades businesses already pay for Canva to knock out social posts, quote covers and site boards. Until now, getting a decent custom image meant buying stock photos, paying a freelance designer, or wrestling with a separate AI image tool and a second subscription. Craft removes that extra step. It sits inside the software you already use.
Take a kitchen fitter who wants a before-and-after post for Instagram, or a shop fitting out their van with new livery and wanting a mock-up before they commit. Previously that was either a stock photo that did not quite fit, or a few hours lost hunting for the right image and resizing it. With Craft, you type what you want, Canva plans the layout, and you get a usable image inside the same tab you were already working in. That is not a big number of hours saved on any one job, but multiply it across every social post, every quote cover and every tender document a small firm produces in a year, and it adds up.
There is a margin point too. Freelance design work for a single social graphic typically runs £15 to £40. A firm posting twice a week on Instagram and Facebook, and knocking out the odd mocked-up render for a client, has been quietly spending hundreds of pounds a year on assets that Craft now produces inside a subscription most owners already hold.
What to do this month
- If you already have Canva, open it and try Craft on your next social post or quote cover before buying a stock image.
- Build a short brief template (your trade, your colours, your logo) so every image comes out on-brand without extra tweaking.
- Stop renewing any separate AI image subscription until you have tested whether Craft covers the job.
