OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads Could Change How Small Shops Get Found

19 September 2026

OpenAI has added Sponsored Agents to ChatGPT adverts, interactive ad units that plug directly into a merchant's Shopify catalogue or HubSpot contact lists. Announced this week, the feature lets someone chatting with ChatGPT about a product get an answer that includes live stock, price and delivery information pulled straight from the retailer's store, rather than a static link.

What it means for your hours and margin

For UK owners running a Shopify shop, this is a new place customers might find you, alongside Google and social. If a builder is chatting to ChatGPT about where to source a specific fitting or part, a Sponsored Agent could surface your shop's exact stock and price without the customer ever leaving the conversation. That is a potential sale with none of the usual click-through friction, and no extra listing work if your Shopify feed is already tidy.

The catch is that OpenAI has not published pricing. Treat it exactly like Google Ads or Meta Ads at launch, a new channel worth testing with a small, capped budget, not a channel to bet the marketing spend on. Until there is a published cost-per-click or cost-per-lead figure, nobody can tell you the return.

Worked example: a parts supplier already running Google Shopping ads does not need to shift budget across. Treat ChatGPT's Sponsored Agents as a new test line, not a replacement, until OpenAI publishes a cost figure that lets you compare the two channels fairly.
