OpenAI's New Data Agent: What It Means for Your Reporting

11 September 2026

OpenAI launched a new Data agent inside ChatGPT Work on 10 September 2026. It lets a business connect its own data, spreadsheets, CRM exports, accounting software, and build interactive dashboards using plain English requests. No formulas, no analyst, no exporting to a fresh spreadsheet every time the numbers move.

What it means for your hours

Most owners we talk to don't have a spare analyst. Reporting gets done by whoever has time, usually late on a Friday, usually by hand. The Data agent is aimed squarely at that gap: you connect a data source once and then simply ask for what you need, in normal language, and the dashboard rebuilds itself as new figures land.

Take a worked example. Say a construction firm keeps job costs in a spreadsheet and someone spends four hours a month turning that into a report for the bank, a client or the owner. That is 48 hours a year spent on formatting numbers rather than reading them. Connect that same spreadsheet to the Data agent once, and the report becomes a standing question you can ask at any time, not a monthly chore someone has to remember to do.

There is a catch worth being honest about. The Data agent sits inside ChatGPT Work, which is a paid tier, and someone still has to set up the data connection properly and check what is being shared. The agent removes the manual compiling. It does not remove the need for someone who understands the numbers well enough to ask the right question and sense-check the answer.
