Claude just got simpler for small business owners

Anthropic has merged Claude Cowork and Claude chat into a single product called Claude, and launched two new tools alongside it, Claude Docs and Claude Slides. Until now, owners experimenting with Claude had to work out whether they wanted the chat version, the Cowork version, or Claude Code, three separate products with overlapping names. That confusion is gone. There is now one Claude, and it can hand a quick question the same way it hands over a full report.

For a UK business owner, the headline change is not the merger itself, it is what Claude Docs and Claude Slides let you skip. Say you run a small M&E contracting firm and need to turn a site survey into a proposal for the client by lunchtime. Previously you would draft the wording in Claude, then paste it into Word, fix the formatting, add a logo, then build a separate slide deck in PowerPoint for the pitch meeting. That is at least three tools and probably forty minutes of formatting on top of the thinking time. With Claude Docs and Claude Slides built in, the document and the deck come out of the same conversation, already structured, and you edit rather than rebuild.

Run the numbers on a small trades or construction business sending out, say, four quotes and one client deck a week. Shaving even twenty minutes of formatting off each one is roughly two hours a week back, which is close to a hundred hours a year. That will not replace the person who prices the job, but it removes the admin tax around presenting it properly, and it is the sort of saving that compounds because it happens every single week without anyone remembering to claim credit for it.

The other practical point is cost. If your business already pays for a Claude subscription, Docs and Slides are included, not an upsell. That matters for owners who have been burned before by a tool promising savings and then charging extra for the bit that actually saves the time.

What to do about it this month:

• If you already use Claude, open Claude Docs on your next quote or client letter and see how much editing it actually needs.
• Try Claude Slides on the next pitch deck instead of building it in PowerPoint from scratch.
• If you do not use Claude yet, this is a reasonable moment to trial it, the interface confusion that put people off is exactly what Anthropic has just fixed.
