EU AI Labelling Rules Now Live: What It Costs UK Firms
4 August 2026
The EU's new AI transparency and labelling rules came into force this week, requiring any AI-generated or AI-assisted content shown to EU users to carry a clear label. That covers marketing copy, product images, chatbots and voice assistants — anywhere AI has touched what a customer sees or hears.
Why this matters if you sell into Europe
If you're a UK manufacturer, parts supplier or software firm with customers in the EU, this isn't a Brussels problem you can ignore. Unlabelled AI content aimed at EU buyers is now a compliance breach, not just a bad look. Trading standards bodies across member states can act on it, and larger EU customers will start asking suppliers to confirm compliance before renewing contracts.
Worked example: say you run a parts business turning over £2m, with 15% of sales going to distributors in Germany and France. Your marketing team has been using AI to draft product descriptions and generate lifestyle images for the website and catalogues sent to those distributors. Under the new rules, every one of those assets needs a visible AI label unless a human has substantially rewritten or verified it. Retrofitting labels across a catalogue of 400 SKUs, plus website copy, is a week of admin you didn't budget for — call it 30-40 hours at a fully loaded cost of £25-£35 an hour. That's £1,000-£1,400 in unplanned labour, before any legal review.
The upside: this is a one-off fix, not an ongoing tax, if you build labelling into your process now rather than after a distributor flags it.
What to do this month
- Audit anything AI-generated or AI-assisted that reaches EU customers — website copy, product images, email campaigns, chatbot scripts.
- Decide per asset: human-rewritten (no label needed) or AI-touched (label it) — don't guess, document the decision.
- Use the European Commission's standard AI labels rather than designing your own — it's faster and defensible if challenged.
- Brief whoever runs your marketing or e-commerce platform this week, not next quarter — distributors will ask before renewal season.
This is a compliance cost, not a growth story. Treat it as a fixed one-off task, get it off your desk, and move on.
