UK Small Business AI Use Doubles to 47%
9 September 2026
AI use among UK small businesses has more than doubled in a year, reaching 47%, according to a new survey from Simply Business. Multiple outlets, including FF News and Business Matters, reported the same figure this week, alongside a noted "confidence gap": many owners who use AI still aren't sure it's paying off.
What it means for your hours
Doubling adoption is not the same as doubling value. The survey's own confidence gap tells you why: most small firms are still using AI for scraps of work — a draft email here, a summarised document there — rather than wiring it into a process that runs every single week.
Take a worked example. A five-person building firm spends roughly 45 minutes a day per office admin on typing up quotes, chasing suppliers by email, and logging jobs in a spreadsheet. That's roughly 3.75 hours a week, or around 195 hours a year for one person, based on a standard 52-week year. If even half of that is handed to a properly configured AI workflow — quote templates, email drafts, job logs — that's close to 100 hours a year back, worth roughly £1,500 to £2,000 at a typical admin rate, without cutting a single job or hiring anyone new.
The gap between the 47% who've "used AI" and the smaller number seeing real gains usually comes down to one thing: whether the tool is built into a repeatable task, or just opened occasionally out of curiosity. A one-off ChatGPT query to write a job advert saves ten minutes once. A quote template that runs every time a lead comes in saves that ten minutes every single week, for the life of the business.
What to do this month
- Pick one repeatable task — quotes, supplier chasing, or job scheduling — and build a single AI-assisted template for it, rather than trying to "add AI" everywhere at once.
- Time the task before and after. If you can't measure the hours saved, you can't prove the value to yourself or your accountant.
- Ask your bookkeeper or accountant what admin tasks they already see repeated every month — that's usually the highest-value place to start.
- Revisit the tool after 30 days. If it hasn't saved measurable time, drop it and try the next task instead of persisting out of habit.
The UK's small business AI adoption number will keep climbing. The businesses that turn that into margin, rather than just a line in a survey, will be the ones treating it as a process change, not a novelty.
