Half of UK Small Firms Ignore AI — What It's Costing Them
13 August 2026
A fresh survey doing the rounds this week found UK small businesses split down the middle on AI: roughly half say it has no place in their business, while London firms are pulling ahead on adoption. Multiple outlets covered the same data on 10 August, from FF News to Credit Connect to Business News Wales.
Why this matters for your hours
"No place for AI" usually means no one has tried it on the boring stuff yet. Quoting, scheduling, chasing invoices, writing up site notes — these are hours, not strategy. A trades business doing 15 quotes a week at 30 minutes each is spending 7.5 hours just typing numbers into a template. That's a full working day, every week, before a single job gets done.
Worked example: a construction subcontractor with three estimators, each losing an hour a day to admin — chasing suppliers for prices, formatting quotes, updating spreadsheets — loses 15 hours a week across the team. At a modest £35/hour cost to the business, that's £525 a week, or over £27,000 a year, spent on work that a properly set up AI workflow can cut by half or more. That's not a projection. That's arithmetic any owner can do on their own numbers this afternoon.
The survey also found that firms using AI lean on it for admin and customer contact, not for the human relationships that actually win work — quoting fast, following up politely, keeping records straight so nothing falls through a crack. That's the right instinct. AI should do the typing so you can do the talking.
What to do this month
- Pick one repeatable admin task — quoting, invoice chasing, or job note write-ups — and time how long it actually takes across your team for a week.
- Multiply that by an hourly cost. If it's more than a few hundred pounds a week, it's worth fixing.
- Trial one tool or workflow against that single task only. Don't try to automate the whole business at once.
- Review after two weeks: did it save real hours, or just move the work around?
The firms getting ahead aren't the ones with the most AI. They're the ones who picked the one task costing them the most hours and fixed it first.
