Meta Opens WhatsApp Business Setup to AI Agents

16 September 2026

Meta has launched a new WhatsApp Business MCP server. It is the connective tissue that lets AI coding agents such as Claude, Codex, Cursor and ChatGPT handle account setup, message templates, testing and troubleshooting on your behalf. Developers no longer need to hand-build the plumbing for automated WhatsApp replies. The agent does the configuration, tests it, and flags problems before a customer ever sees a broken reply.

What it means for your hours and your invoice

Most UK trades and construction firms already run customer enquiries through WhatsApp Business. A kitchen fitter fielding thirty enquiries a week wants an automated first response, a quote template, and a booking link. Building that flow the old way meant a developer manually wiring up templates, testing the webhook, and fixing edge cases, typically two to three days at £400 to £600 a day. That is £800 to £1,800 for a single automated flow.

With the MCP server, a developer or agency can point an AI coding agent at the same job. The agent configures the templates, runs the tests, and surfaces the errors itself. That does not eliminate the work, but it removes the slowest and most repetitive part of it, the manual testing and debugging cycle. The realistic outcome is a build that used to take days now taking hours, and a lower bill for the same result.

The risk is not in the technology, it is in trusting an untested flow with real customers. Anyone building this for you should still show you the templates before they go live, and you should test the first-response flow yourself with a handful of real enquiries before switching it on for everyone.
